The National Bank of Georgia announces the Formal Economic Research Program.

In order to improve the quality and foster the economic research the National Bank of Georgia is announcing a formal research program for the years 2007 and 2008. The aim of the program is to advance the frontiers of economic research in Georgia, improve the quality of the research and raise it to international levels. The submission of the papers to the National Bank of Georgia covering the priority areas predefined in program will start in February 2007. The papers will be evaluated on the competitive basis and best papers will be published as working papers of the National Bank of Georgia. 

The primary objectives of research program conducted under the auspices of the NBG will be to support and implement projects with direct relevance to Georgia’s economic and monetary policies. The research will be focused one the areas of economic policy that stand at the center of the NBG’s activities - such as monetary policy, financial sector surveillance and financial stability. In implementing the NBG’s research program for 2007–08, the National Bank of Georgia will closely cooperate with the International School of Economics at Tbilisi State University (ISET). With the financial and material support of the latter the NBG will provide talented researchers with financial and other support (including data and software access). 

One of the most important outcomes of the economic research program will be launching of the NBG’s working papers series, published in English. The Research Review Committee for this edition will be comprised by reviewers consisting of the NBG management, faculty members of ISET and Economic Education Research Consortium (EERC) in Kiev, International Monetary Fund (IMF) staff members, Williams college faculty of economics and the Bank of Netherlands staff. At the same time the program will help to establish a critical mass of Georgian professional economists, who will contribute to the further development of economic research in Georgia.
